Meditations is the foundation for Renee’s contemporary color field work. The extraordinary quality of color and texture are determined scientifically in the studio. Prior to the layering process on larger work, each color is first examined in ‘studies’ to determine viscosity in relation to time and temperature. Paint is poured on; manipulated with the elements of heat, wind, water and gravity; and pushed to its limit.  

Over time, every color unearths a certain characteristic – drooping, pooling, ripping, cracking.  It is each colors ‘signature effect’ that drives Phillips to begin her multi-layering process of enamel paint, and it is the physicality of movement that often results in seductive like compositions of color.
